*SUMMARY*
Topics discussed:
1) Report on CompuServe/AOL support for CBA using oldmail (Scott Fullerton)
2) Purchase negotiation update: RSA DSI (Linda Laub)
3) New products to consider (group)
4) Evaluation updates (evaluation team)
5) Standard vs. Product (group)
=================
1) *COMPUSERVE SUPPORT FOR BUSINESS ACCOUNTS(CBA): (Scott Fullerton)*
While there is still a surprising amount of confusion among AOL regarding their
own policies and services, we are getting resolution on the essential aspects
of CBA, thanks to the helpful sleuthing of an AOL marketing manager.
Members can still obtain CBA and still have the application fee waived using
the same code/id as before. Members should call (800) 226-0928.
The fax-back service, (800) 343-8913, has been discontinued indefinitely. The
other number indicated in the manual (614) 529-1333 is also discontinued.
Scott will write a draft bulletin to go to CommonLine members.
2) *PURCHASE NEGOTIATION UPDATES: RSA DSI (Linda Laub)*
Linda reported on the feasibility of purchasing licenses under the provisions
stipulated by RSA DSI, viz.: 1) A single purchasing entity; 2) Using the
provided boilerplate license terms; 3) In which purchases would be completed by
the end of May. Linda reviewed the boilerplate license terms and reported that
for NCHELP to purchase under these terms would be too problematic. There would
be risk of liability and the complexity of setting up sublicensing terms with
each of the members. In her opinion, the best strategy would be to push for
separate licensing terms such as we had been developing with NAI. She offered
to negotiate this with their legal staff. She and Brian would pursue this.
3) *NEW PRODUCTS TO CONSIDER*
Entrust (Dawn Harris)
Evaluation copies will be sent out to the team within the next few days. We
are awaiting pricing information.
Cylink
Dave Leonard will get information and report next week.
4) *EVALUATION UPDATES (Evaluation Team)*
a)RSA DSI
The library requires the use of C/C++. It is not yet clear to evaluators
whether it is possible, and if so how, to avoid x.509 hierarchies. The toolkit
does not seem to handle mime encoding. Apparently, this must be done by hand.
No "show-stoppers" have yet been encountered. A propos the requirement for
C/C++, the idea was again discussed that one member could compile the library
into a DLL and make this available to the rest. There was some discussion
about the onus of support and documentation. The concept remains a possibility
to consider.
b) Information Security Corporation/AT&T
The team received the library Wednesday (one day before the meeting) and thus
had no findings to report.
5 *STANDARDS VS. PRODUCTS*
Scott again raised the question posed by Paul in the prior meeting: should we
not be focusing on standards rather than products. In the ideal situation,
there would be an open encryption standard with many vendors supplying
compliant software where compliance meant mutual compatibility. (Such a
standard prevailed in the halcyon days of King Arthur, in the timeless isle of
Tir na Nog, and before the fall of the tower of Babel and has since been
tantalizingly elusive, though it is said the unicorns still communicate this
way) This seems to be the direction of open PGP and open S/MIME. Neither of
these standards, however, are mature enough to use.
Members were asked to explore this idea further.
